Transformational Leadership: Guest talk by Dr. Shahzad (Director Marketing & Sales - Getz Pharma)

An inspirational session given by Dr. Shahzad on transformational leadership. He was focused on how a particular vision can be turned into reality, how leadership should be practiced and transformation can attain sustainability.

“Leadership is a practice based profession”, said by Dr. Shahzad. Learning should always be followed by practice and the secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting old but on building new. One should need to look up on those things which he can easily continue in order to sustain transformation.

The speaker moreover gave a deep insight about Getz Pharma and in this regard related every aspect to their practices. Getz Pharma is a research driven, branded generic, manufacturing pharmaceutical company with global outlook. It is third largest pharma company, largest exporter, tax payer, employer and investor as well. The company believes in Darwin’s theory of being change responsive thus it makes long ranged plan and changes its vision after every 5 years.

Getz Pharma works on leadership grid model which has two concerns; for people (dependent) and for results (independent) and it aims to create a balance between the two. The efficient use of resources and optimal results are thus linked by an effective teamwork. Based on this grid the leaderships are of certain natures; Controlling (9-1), Accommodating (1,9), Status Quo (5,5), Indifferent(1,1) and Sound (9-9).

It takes critique, initiative, inquiry, advocacy, decision making, conflict resolution and resilience to best sustain and requires 4 grid steps for making transformation successful:

1) Theory      2) Self Deception    3) Motivation    4) Team Support

Last but not least it was interactive and insightful session with superb speaking style!

  1. According to him, the Managerial Grid is based on two behavioral dimensions which are Concern for People (The degree to which a leader considers the needs of team members, their interests, and areas of personal development when deciding how best to accomplish a task.) and Concern for Results (The degree to which a leader emphasizes concrete objectives, organizational efficiency and high productivity when deciding how best to accomplish a task). These things determine whether a person is a 1-1, 5-5, 1-9, 9-1, or 9,9 leader.

  3. Management and leadership is a practice based profession like medicine and law. All is the same case. Try and get to seek opportunity and direction from people. GSK is about research driven , branded generic , manufacturing pharmaceutical company that has a global outlook. GSK comes at number three position in Pakistan , it has been able to achieve this by believing in the transformation which is to focus all energy on building new than working on the old things and direction. Then focusing on sustaining the changes is important, so the basic rule is to focus on the change which can be continued. There should be a constant push for selling vision in the company to employees. Transformation needs a positive attitude and behavior, along with that to be in one direction, the leader must have strong , bold vision. The grid model helps to understand where the leadership of a leader lies which was made on the basis of two things 1) concern of the people and 2) concern of the profit. The transformation will only come when there is a balance between the two factors.

  4. Getz Pharma, in a span of 20 years has archived what, companies such as GSK and Abbot could not archive in multiple decades. This is all due to the transformational leadership they have in practice at their organization. It was observed that the leaders in their organizational are very humble and open to criticism. every year a camp is held and employees are encouraged to point out negative aspects of a leader which hinder performance in the organization.

  5. Dr. Shahzad gives a very inspirational and impactful lecture on leadership. He quotes a statement “whatever you learn or read until unless you practice it you wouldn’t be successful” and this is the main characteristic of transformational leadership. He explained that the transformation is the secret of change and is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new. He further explains about sustainable transformation which is not the strongest of the species that survives, or the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

  6. Dr Shahzad was a great and inspirational speaker. He said that you cannot be a professional unless you practice it whether it is law, management or leadership. he told us about his company Getz Pharma, where he is working as Director Sales and Marketing. Getz Pharma is the only Pakistani company that has a presence in India and is the 3rd largest Pharma in Pakistan. Dr. Shahzad also quoted Socrates that the secret to change is to focus all of our energy, not on fighting the old but on building new.
Coming to leadership he said that a good leader is one when his employees have a trust on him. he should have good ethical values, sense of justice , must have a strategic vision and is committed to his work. A leader should understand what is right instead of who is right.
Dr Shahzad taught us the lesson of how to become a transformational leader and how motivation and team support can make an organization successful.
