Guest talk by Dr. Irfan Hyder on Why Leaders fail.

The Dean of IoBM, Dr. Irfan Hyder, joined the leadership class, at IoBM, to shed light on the concept of leadership, its importance and under what circumstances does it fail.

He said that Universities that were founded in the 1900s were all focused on how they can develop better business administrators, yet until 2000 it was realized that the Leaders are what actually drive the future of the organizations and corporations. Hence, Leadership schools started to come into being in Pakistan.
Leaders vary in types and functionality, some are transactional, some are transformational but if they lack something, they may fail. So why do leaders fail?

Its often due to the Time dimensions they use. It is said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. Its integral that a leader proposes an idea that needs to be crystallized in the right time. The time dimension matters, else the idea may go useless.

The Rituals they perform must retain behind a legacy. A leader needs to shape another leader for his legacy to continue. When they fail to do that, they create no resources for the future. A leader needs to develop such a framework that shapes processes that highlight his contemporary leadership skills.
The leaders are for the people. They need to seek what the people want and how they want. The times are changing and if they don’t pertain to the time they lose. They need to stay aware of the people’s needs. What and how is the key.

Its integral that every leader has values, code of conduct that he maintains for himself to follow. He needs to set examples for his followers.

A leader is actually meant to align his mission and values with others and that is how he generates followers.  Once he does that, he helps them get drive by their own impulses.
Hence a leader will certainly fail if he is not able to communicate his vision to the people and then not bring them together to believe in it. His vision should be powerful enough to bring everyone under the same banner and for the same destiny.  Hence connectivity is essential for a leader with others so he can generate follower-ship.

Disillusionment also is a tool which may hit the leaders’ success. If a leader generates feelings and does not act on them, he is a fail. Followers need to know and see that whatever their leader shows them, he can achieve it. He can do, what they believe him to do.  The cynicism by the followers may lead him to be a failure if he can not achieve what he promises to. The feelings he generates should be well in line with the feelings of his followers always.

For a leader to not fail, he should be intrinsically and extrinsically strong enough to keep himself motivated, his values strong and his followers in line with his own vision.

  1. Dr. Irfan Hyder, the Dean of Institute of Business Management delivered an interesting session on why do leaders fail and related topics to the students of leadership class.

According to him out of various leadership theories like transformational, transactional, level 5 leadership, lassie faire and so on, he doesn’t consider autocratic and transactional leadership as leadership styles. He claims that these two styles are more related to managers’ roles. He believes leaders are those people who bring change in others’ lives. Whereas, autocratic and transactional leadership doesn’t change the life rather they dictate their people. Managers work on the carrot & stick, reward & punishment and Pavlov conditioning theories.

He also gave an example of Allama Iqbal, how he gave his idea in 1930, but we saw the crystallization of the idea in 1947. This is what he called as thought leadership. He explained that sometimes we have to think about the time dimension. Through this example Dr. Irfan wanted to accentuate on the fact that there is nothing more powerful than the idea whose time has come. He also told that time dimension ideas could be measured through four legacies of a leader that are building, people, processes and values. Buildings are the tangible concrete. We can measure leadership through building. He gave an example of Shah Jehan and told that influence of these buildings measure of legacies. Then he defined people by saying that some leader lead by creating the legacy of people. They create the people and those people create the followers then and this process goes on. For example: different forms of Sufism got spread and penetrated by different people in a legacy form. For processes he elucidated that some leaders leave behind certain behavioral processes, ritual, etc. for example: Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) left behind the act of sacrificing an animal. He gave another example of Ford, that the company introduced the assembly line process and this legacy is going on for automation. He explained values by giving an example of Daata Darbar, how people from all over the country come in a huge crowd every day since 1000 years. He further told that values and people are two legacies that are vital for us.

Furthermore, he then defined leadership as people getting inspired through a vision and a purpose. The alignment of purpose and vision between leader and followers is leadership. Manager is a person that gets the work done but leader is a focused on his own loftiness vision and purpose. A leader fails when there is no loftiness vision. His vision is not powerful enough to get his followers voluntarily. Secondly when the purpose and vision doesn’t touch the hearts of the people; when the leader lacks the passion and feelings that were the way to address the hearts of other people then he is not a leader. A leader also fails when there is no empathy showed by him. Moreover, he fails when there is a mismatch that leads to disillusionment. That is he performs below expectations. He doesn’t fulfill his promises; he generates feelings but later his actions don’t compliment his sayings. Perception of selfishness in a leader is a disaster. This is how we can differentiate between the two domains that are managers and leaders.

  2. We had a guest speaker session in our leadership class by Syed Irfan Hayder. He is the dean of institute

of business management. The topic under discussion was “why leaders fail?”

According to him leader is the one which has many meanings that it has lost its true essence. There are

different styles of leadership like servant, transformational, transactional, autocratic etc. in leadership

one of the most important factor is time dimension. Leader can predict the future beforehand for

example Allam Iqbal, In 1930 he saw the crystallization of Pakistan. He died at 1938 and could not see

his dream being fulfilled. There is nothing more powerful than the idea beforehand. He also shared with

us about his blog that he has written regarding the legacies of a leader. The first one is building which

means in the form of concrete monuments. Second are the people; leaders create people and people

create legacies that how the influence is going on, third are the processes which are also be called

rituals, the processes should be flexible like the assembly line of operations. Last are the values in which

carrot and stick comes in. leadership styles very much depend on the value that he has. He also told us

that manager is the person whose primary goal is to motivate people. Transactional styles of leadership

is the one in which you give and take however in autocratic style of leadership leader never think of

reward but always think in the negative side. Leadership means to inspire people. If the vision of the

leader is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance of the people around him then he will not able to

influence others to strive for that vision. Leader is the one who wants the voluntary fellowship and he

inspires the heart of the people not the mind. The leaders fail to generate the connectivity between the

feelings and the goals to be followed this happened because if disillusionment which is generated

because of mismatch of action and expectations.

  3. Dr. Irfan Haider, Dean of IoBM conducted his speaker session upon why leaders fail. He started off by mentioning that initially in the 1900s universities and educational institutes focused on nurturing administrators however until 2000 they realized that they need to develop leaders and that is when universities in Pakistan started doing the same. However despite the nature of leaders being transformational or transactional there is something that results in their failure and the session was heavily focused upon finding out that something.
According to Dr. Irfan it is the time dimension that matters most. He said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time is right and it is the crystallization of this idea that makes a leader great. Hence forth for a great leader it is very necessary that he proposes ideas in the right time dimension.
Leaders according to him are those people who leave behind such an intense legacy that even after thousands of years people follow those legacies in the form of rituals. Leaving behind a legacy is very important as this is the only thing you will be remembered for. Apart from that it is also crucial that leaders select the right heirs to continue their legacy. There is nothing worse than a leader fading away with all his methodologies and ideologies. A leader must set examples for his followers.
Dr. Irfan talked about the vision of a leader and how important it is in bringing together his followers. According to him the vision of a leader should be so vast so huge that followers with different mind sets and ideologies should come under the same umbrella and it is equally important to communicate that vision to the followers so that they can follow the steps of the leader. The following of a leader is strengthened by the fact that how much can he communicate and translate his vision amongst his followers. Ultimately it is this vision that everyone will remember for centuries hence it is very important to communicate it.
Disillusionment was mentioned as to how this destroys the well being of a leader and how certain leaders generate feelings and do not act upon them. This leads to failure. Followers need an absolute figure of unwavering strength to follow and a leader who cannot align his own thoughts and acts is not someone worthy of being followed. Eventually if followers end up disowning a leader that leads to further disaster for the leader as he is wounded for his entire life. A leader should be strong with his beliefs and values intrinsically and extrinsically to portray them to his followers. It is this portrayal that will determine his success.

  4. From the guest speaking session of Syed Irfan Hyder on the topic of Why Leaders Fail, so according to him Leader is a term which has so many meanings . The session starts with the topic that the IBA that comes in 1955 develops the administrators and talks about the leaders whereas, KSBL comes in 2013 also talks about leaders. There are some styles of leadership which involves Servant, Transformational, Transactional, Autocratic and Laissez Faire. According to sir Irfan Hyder the first most important thing is the time dimension. He also adds that world can never be more powerful without the great leader and it is another term thought of leadership. He explains that there are 4 legacies of leaders and it involves: Buiding, People, Processes and Values. Here building involves the example of Shahjahan and it also involves the concreteness. People involves the leaders are successful by legacy of people. Processes in some sense we can say rituals and the values. The time of managers goes in the giving rewards and punishment. The loftiness of the vision has also discussed. Sometimes it has also happened that the Leader has its own vision and mission and the followers has their own vision and mission. Purpose means the purpose of existence and we should know that why do we exist and one should know its purpose of existence as an MBA and we should know the purpose of our existence as a human being on planet.
The definition of management tells us the getting work done and the purpose for the manager is to motivate people to go up there or to help the people in the achievement of goal and the leader relies on the intrinsic motivation and there are some reasons due to which leadership fail are: The leadership fail when the vision of the leader is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance the acceptance of those who are around him, leadership fails when the leaders has no passion and feelings that addresses people and leaders are those who addresses the heart of followers not the mind. It is the heart of followers that says that this person is right. Leaders sometimes fail due to inability of generating the feelings of followers. Sometimes leaders underperform due to which they fail. The main thing is to build hope. Selflessness of the vision is the thing that makes a person great. If a person is a selfish so it is a disaster. My revenue will be more than last year so it should not be a person’s vision. Sometimes failure of the leadership is due to the high expectations of the people. Vision is the most important thing for a leader to be focus on, another is the voice of the leader and it should be like it touches the hearts of the followers and another one thing important for a leader is the empathy which is feeling the way others feel and it also involves be happy when others are happy and we should feel sorrow when others do. Leadership is the process of discovery.

  5. Guest speaker session of Syed irfan hyder on why leaders fail??? In introduction he told that, it has been realized that the Leaders are what actually drive the future of the organizations and corporations. They vary in types and functionality, some are transactional, some are transformational but if they lack something, they may fail. He further emphasized that, It’s due to the time dimensions the leaders use. He said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea on time which can lead to the solution. A leader proposes an idea that needs to be crystallized in the right time. The time dimension matters, otherwise the idea may go in vain.
Further he told us that, the Rituals leaders perform must leave behind a legacy. A leader needs to shape another leader for his legacy to continue. 6. The guest speaking session on Why leaders fail conducted by Dr.Irfan Hyder , the Dean of IoBM. He explained that the word leader has so many meanings . In earlier times universities concentrate on administration then it move towards management and now emphasizes on leadership. Leadership has many styles and approaches like transactional leadership, transformational leadership, autocratic and many others. Time dimension is very important in leadership.
Leaders has four legacies that are building which means how leaders influence , second is people means to create follower who bring leaders legacy, processes and values.
He added leaders are those people who inspire , change and influence their followers. Transformational leadership is effective through this a leader can align their followers towards common cause and purpose by setting high targets and getting them toward those targets. The transactional and autocratic leadership style is based on reward and punishment approach (carrot & stick).
Leaders should have strong vision and purpose which is also realistic at the same time towards which you are calling people. He explained that leaders’ vision should be high enough that all followers vision are converge with each other at one point or direction. Purpose of driving force should be defined. Purpose and followers can bring together through effective leadership qualities. Whereas managers means to getting work done through people and rely on intrinsic approach (internal rewards). There should be win-win situation.
He explained the laissez-faire leadership, which is also known as delegative leadership, is a type of leadership style in which leaders are hands-off and allow group members to make the decisions. Failure to design powerful vision is because of autocratic leadership styles. A leader is a person wants to have volunteer followership in which people attract to the sincerity of the purpose. If a leader does not have passion , purpose then people won’t follow him and he is not a leader. If leader have so many things to say but not have effective action to carry out so this mismatch can’t connect people with vision . He added hope not fulfill so it leads to hopelessness which leads to disillusionment.
Leaders not fail if they active people towards the targets, selflessly work and provide guidance how to achieve targets and use authentic leadership approach. He explained that mission should be realistic, understandable and achievable so people can connect and attract towards it. Leaders may underperform that’s why they become fail .In last he summarized by saying that leaders personality should resonate with the purpose. The reason why leaders fail is because of failure in any one of the following:
    1. Loftiness of vision, keeping it higher and its articulation
    2. Purpose which connect people and influence hearts
    3. Feeling the way others feel. (Empathy)
Leadership is a continuous process and process of discovering and experiencing with followers.

  7. Dr. Irfan an inspiring personality himself gave his views over leadership and why leaders fail. According to him leader is a term which has so many meanings. Previously we had words as administrator which later changed to manager and later to leader. There are many types of leadership such as transactional, transformational, autocratic etc. However, there is also a type of leadership know as thought leadership. The example we see back in 1930 when Allama Iqbal gave the idea of a separate homeland. The idea crystallized later in 1947 in shape of a separate country Pakistan.
He also talked about four legacies of a leader. They are building, people, processes and values. The building is leadership in form of concrete monument, people are ones who create people who take their legacies forward that travel from heart to heart, processes are rituals and values are inbuilt.
Moreover, manager is one who uses rewards and punishment to motivate people. He acts more like a transactional and autocratic leader. However a leader inspires. He is selfless. He has a vision and purpose of existence. A manager is the person who gets the work done but a leader focuses on loftiness of vision. His purpose is to motivate people to go up there. He shows the path and relied on the people to do certain work.
When his vision is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance from others then at that point in time he fails. He needs volunteering following not cohesive following. When he speaks the heart of the people speaks in unity with him. The people tune in the tone generated by the leader. If he has no power to address feeling of people then he has failed as a leader.
At times people blindly follow the leader so they shit their minds off and just follow with the feeling. They follow with hearts. They feel that the leader feels what they feel. At times leader can fail too. When does that happen? It happens when the expectation of the people is more than what is actually delivered by the leader. The leader makes huge promises and fails to deliver them due to this mismatch a disillusion is created reflecting in behaviours of the people. So, may underperform of actions and expectations. But it is essential to create awareness to avoid failures.
A good leader will endlessly try to win hopes and hearts. He would give his 100% to gain trust so people follow his footprints. He would work selflessly and motivate people. He will have some vision and purpose without which he will not be able to succeed. However, at times a leader vision gets abstract when he has bigger purpose, at that point in time his vision is abstract its selfless. For him work is not his objective, it’s a by product of the alignment of his vision.
On a closing note Dr. Irfan said that these three qualities are highest in a leader. The first one is vision, second one is his voice that travels in heart and third one is empathy he feels the way others feel.

  8. Guest Speaker Session by Dr. Irfan Hyder

On Saturday, 5 November, 2016, Mr. Shiraz Ahmed's Leadership, Ethics, and Change class had the privilege to hear the thoughts and wisdom of Dr. Irfan Hyder, who is currently the Dean of IoBM and CES. He graced tehe class with a rigorous 60-minute session on leadership, who leaders are, and why they fail.

    Background

Dr. Irfan Hyder has over 18 years of professional experience spanning multiple fields, positions, and boards. While he may have been here to provide a rather basic overview of leadership, the combination of his knowledge and its delivery was what was truly astonishing.

    The Session

The session began rather slowly, with the Dean of IoBM, Dr. Irfan Hyder, diving straight into what leadership actually is, which is rather peculiar considering the numerous courses students complete before coming to this course. Yet, despite this, by delving forward to why they fail, he was able to make us question our own knowledge of leadership.
He talked about the numerous different universities in Pakistan and how each was slowly changing over the decades from administration, to leadership and that the global and local economy was becoming increasingly reliant on "leaders" more than "managers."
As other speakers have done, he discussed the different types of leadership and how some types weren't, in essence, "leadership" but rather managerial approaches that rely primarily on reward and punishment. With this said, he talked about the "time dimension" of leadership and how ideas that "nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come." With that in mind, it became evident that for a leader, time truly is of the essence. If they have an idea, they need to materialize it in a process or method straight away.
Dr. Irfan Hyder then proceeded to talk about the concept of legacies and how every leader works to leave one behind. In my opinion, leaders do this either consciously or unconsciously. While some followers or leaders build monuments in their honor, some have legacies in their processes and values. Unfortunately, buildings and monuments crumble and values don't always progress across generations. That's why some, rather interestingly, leave their legacy behind in people.
In his opinion, leaving people behind as your legacy truly is the way leaders shape the future. Their failure to do so results in future generations in the workplace unable to generate, utilize, and mobilize resources for the future. This, in his opinion, is why leaders fail.
Another reason why they fail is, while still pertaining to the dimension of time, they are unable to keep up with time and, in relevance, people's changing needs and wants. Leaders need to be able to understand and empathize with their followers and develop strategies accordingly.
While the flow of the session seemed fragmented by now, the question of 'purpose' sparked it once more. Dr. Irfan Hyder talked about how vital it is for leaders to have the right purpose. To illustrate this fact, he asked us students to google the mission and vision statements of top organization such as Disneyland and Wal-Mart.
We see that the leaders who helped these large organizations grow were not driven by a desire for money but by a purpose to make the lives of people better in one way or another. They used their personality. values, and action to set examples and worked for a higher cause. By doing so, the chances of a leader failing are slim.

    Conclusion

Overall, the real take away from this guest speaker session was that leaders need to truly have a set purpose and work diligently if they don't want to fail. A leader who is passionate about their purpose, are driven by it, and are able to communicate this same mission with others is powerful and is able to really both leave behind a legacy and ensure future success, even when they are gone.

  9. Guest speaker session by Dr.Irfan Haider (Dean IoBM) on “why leaders fail?” He told that there are many types of leadership, (transformational, transactional, autocratic etc). But choosing the right style, at the right time in the right situation is a key element of leader effectiveness. That’s not what most people do—they have one style used in many situations. It’s like having only one suit or one dress, something you wear everywhere. Of course, all of us would agree that having only one set of clothes is ridiculous. But then, so is having only one leadership style. The job of leaders is to inspire collective efforts and devise smart strategies. A leader strives to get people working together productively, communicating the history of the enterprise can instill a sense of identity and purpose and suggest the goals that will resonate. Leaders motivate people to overcome challenges. Leadership is the energetic process of getting other people fully and willingly committed to a new and sustainable course of action, to meet commonly agreed objectives whilst having commonly held values.
Leaders fail for not establishing a great enough sense of urgency. Without motivation, people won’t help and the effort goes nowhere. It is the job of leadership to recruit, mentor, deploy, and retain management talent. If the management team is not getting the job done, it’s not a management problem, it’s the fault of executive leadership. Leadership fails when not creating a powerful enough guiding coalition. The leadership coalition grows and grows over time. But whenever some minimum mass is not achieved early in the effort, nothing much worthwhile happens. Major change is impossible unless the head of the organization is an active supporter. The coalition is always pretty powerful—in terms of titles, information and expertise, reputations and relationships. Leaders fail because of lack of vision. If there is no vision, a flawed vision, or a poorly communicated vision, the responsibility falls squarely in the lap of executive leadership. Moreover, if the vision is not in alignment with the corporate values there will also be troubled waters ahead. A vision says something that clarifies the direction in which an organization needs to move. The vision must: Clearly set organizational direction and purpose, Inspire loyalty and caring through the involvement of all employees, Display and reflect the unique strengths, culture, values, beliefs and direction of the organization, Inspire enthusiasm, belief, commitment and excitement in company member. Leaders fail when not systematically planning for and creating short-term wins. Characteristics of a Successful Leadership Style is Choose to lead, Provide inspiration, Make other people feel important and appreciated , Live your values, Behave ethically. Leaders set the pace through your expectations and example. Leaders establish an environment of continuous improvement and provide opportunities for people to grow, both personally and professionally.

  10. Dr. Irfan Hyder was the guest speaker for last week’s session and his talk was on ‘Why leaders fail?’ He started his talk by telling us few universities that have been teaching leadership like IBA since 1955. There are various leadership styles like transformational leadership, transactional leadership, servant leadership, autocratic leadership, less is fair leadership etc. Dr. Irfan also shared his views that how a leader’s vision takes time to crystalize. Like Allama Iqbal gave the idea of Pakistan in 1930, he died in 1938. But in 1947, we see the actual crystallization of his idea into reality. He also said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time is come. There is a certain time dimension in which a person’s idea has to be measured.
He also discussed certain legacies for which a leader is known or recognized for. The first legacy is those leaders who leave behind buildings/monuments/palaces and the influence of those buildings/monuments on people. The second legacy is those leaders who have a certain cult following. They leave a legacy of people and then they take the leaders legacy forward. The third legacy is those leaders who leave behind certain processes/rituals. Like Henry Ford who left behind the process of assembly lines. These processes can also be patented. The fourth legacy is those leaders who leave behind certain values and traditions.
Dr. Irfan also explained to us that transactional and autocratic leaders are not actually leaders. They actually fall in the manager category because a manager is a person whose primary tools are reward and punish people and that’s exactly what transactional and autocratic leaders do. The domains of leadership and leaders are about their vision and purpose. The loftiness of your vision and your goal that you want to achieve. The second thing is your purpose. It’s the most essential element for a leader. Leaders need to know their purpose of existence. Managers are the ones who have to get the work done. Leaders are focused on their own lofty vision and they make sure it’s communicated among its followers. Leaders rely on intrinsic motivation to be driven by their own impulses.
He further elaborated to us that a leader may not be an actual leader when his vision is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance of those around him. A leader always wants a voluntary following not a cohesive one. Leaders always addresses your heart not mind. Dr. Irfan also said that leaders may fail in generating the connectivity with the feelings of his followers. It can lead to a mismatch and a mismatch of expectations can lead to disillusionment.
He concluded that a leader generally fails if he has a perception of selfishness. A leader must ensure that he is walking the talk to gain the trust and respect of his followers.

  11. Dr. Irfan Hyder, the Dean of Iobm and CES, during the guest speaker session on Saturday, 5th November 2016, shared his views on leadership and the reasons why leaders fail. He started of the session by saying that world administration has changed into management which has now changed into leadership. There are various leadership styles; Transformational, transactional, autocratic, servant etc. There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come so there is a time dimension in which a person’s idea has to be measured.
    He explained that there are 4 legacies of a leader;
    1. One type of legacy can be in terms of concrete monuments (like buildings) eg. Shahjehan
    2. People: There are some leaders who lead legacies of people. We may not even know the names of those leaders who created people, and they moved from heart to heart.
    3. Processes: Some leaders leave behind processes and these can also be called as rituals. Now the processes are automated and we are going from mass production to customized production.
    4. Values: These leaders leave behind values that live on.
He talked about leaders who had been changing lives. A manager is a person whose primary roles include rewards and punishment. But when we talk about leaders we are talking about people getting inspired. And the loftiness of your vision and what you want to achieve matters. And the key element is your purpose, the purpose of existence is important.
A leader does not use the tools of reward and punishment to get work done. Leaders focus on their own lofty vision and in the process motivates you to reach there, where win-win situation is created. He shows the path and relies on the intrinsic motivation to be driven by his own impulses.
Then Dr. Irfan discussed the reasons that a leader might fail. One reason is that he lies in the category of Transactional or autocratic leadership. A leader fails when his vision is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance of those around him, or failure to design a powerful vision or mission. Some leaders may also fail in generating that connectivity with the followers and a mismatch is created which leads to disillusionment. Selfishness is a leader is disastrous.
A good leader generates hope and will in people and he is a person who wants a voluntary followership not coercive. When he speaks, the heart of his people speaks in unison. A leader addresses the heart of his people, not the mind.

  13. Doctor Irfan Haider conducted a session in the class on Why leaders fail? He started his talk by mentioning how the world management has changed into leaders. And organization has started looking at leadership skills rather than management skills. Even universities have started creating leaders and not managers. Then he talked about the type of leadership styles which were servant, Transactional and Transformational. According to Mr Irfan, transactional leaders are not actually leaders. Because they can’t Impact or influence anyone to change for the benefit of the organization and for him or herself.
Then he said that is there someone who is not a leader, he meant that everyone can be a leader. It is your will that leads you to achieving the essence of leadership. Then he talked about the Thought leadership and said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea and he termed thought leadership as very important tool.
Then he talked about the four legacies of a leader:
Building: in this a person builds something which is beneficial for people and for the organization.
People: he or she impact people and create skills and talent in people to succeed them in the organization.
Processes: he gave example of an Assembly line by FORD which is implemented by manufacturers around the world.
Values: he termed value to be the most important legacy, until the values are not strong a person can never become a leader.
Then he talked about the role of manager and said that a manager is the one who uses carrot and sticks to get the work done. They focus more on rewards and punishment an gave example of skinner parlon conditioning.
Then he said that a leader should have purpose of existence. And he said a leader will fail when his vision will not be powerful enough to gain the acceptance from followers. He said that a vision has to be so high that the followers aim to reach very high. He also said that leaders require voluntarily following and he said that a leader effects the heart and not the mind.
He further said that a leader fails when he or she fails to generate the feeling and connectivity and he termed it as Disillusionment which means mismatch beween feelings or hopes and satisfaction. He said that a leader fails when he does not act according to the feelings of its people and disappointment his or her people by his decisions or acts.
He also said that perception of selfishness is disastarous. A leader should be not be selfish and should consider him as the most important person to bring out change in people.
Then he said that a leader has to have three things in order to succeed:
    1) Height of vision which he already talked about.
    2) Top of the heart talk which means he has to deal with people from heart and not from mind and understand other.
    3) Empathy which is very important for a leader to understand the feelings of others.

  14. Dr. Irfan Hyder, Dean of IoBM expressed his point of view on leadership, leaders and their failure. During his session, he explained us the core understanding of leadership using specific characters of different approaches of Leadership where he also told us how his perspective doesn't correlate with few of the leadership approaches.

He explained different kinds of leadership:
    1. Legacy, Monuments such as Taj Mahal where people remember them for the vision and historic achievements.
    2. Some Leaders create school of thought for people to follow, these might not be highlighted in the history but they are the purpose of bringing a shift in mindset.
    3. Some Leaders bring revolution in terms of processes, exemplified by Ford Motors.
    4. Leaders also create the leadership by values they carry, and the way their values influence people around them and generations to come.

Leaders focus on their own vision and lead people by their approach and vision, their followers create the bi-product of objectives and goals in the process of following their leader.

Leaders fail when their values are weak, their intentions are selfish and doesn't serve the purpose for their followers and mutually beneficial objectives. It might also happen in the situation when there's a mismatch between the goals of leader and followers. Hence it is a complicated situation where they must settle on shared grounds with transparency to create the relation between leader and followers.

  15. Last Saturday we had the pleasure of having over Mr. Irfan Hyder, the Dean of CBM as our Guest Speaker. He gave us his experience about leadership and divided leadership into four common types.
The four types of leadership are not the typical ones but actually as following: 1. Leaders who leave behind buildings, 2. Leaders who leave behind people or followers, 3. Leaders who leave behind processes (such as Henry Ford is remembered for the assembly line) and 4. Leaders who leave behind their values.
He told us how the followers’ personalities resonates with the leaders and that’s the reason of their followership. Also, he went on by describing how a manager uses the carrot & stick approach or rewards and punishes (uses the Pavlov’s conditioning or Skinner’s theory) to manage employees. However, a leader uses his vision to gain followers. A manager actually manages benefits and are autocratic in their ways. Such are also known as transactional leaders, who to be honest are not leaders at all but merely managers.
Three main things that make a leader are his loftiness of vision, talk from the heart and empathy. Pretty much how they make him, the lack of these three characteristics make a leader fail. Vision mixed with purpose are the key elements of leadership. Mr. Irfan Hyder proved this by telling us how if we want a chair moved we would just tell the person to move the chair and associate a reward with it (had we been a manager) while on the other hand, how a leader would show the path and tell how the act would benefit the follower to actually get the chair moved. This raised a few questions about the leader being manipulative but it all depends on the trueness of the person.
A true leader affects your heart and not the mind. Also, he is appealing and does not reason with logic. Leaders who fail may do so when they fail in generating a connection with the followers. Mr. Irfan Hyder also described that a leader may fail when there is a lot of feeling generated about a specific issue but he fails to act on it and fails to actually perform. Then the people, his followers, will get disappointed and there would be disillusionment. A leader has to be walking the talk.
In the end, he mentioned that an injury caused by words stay forever while an injury caused by a sword heals.

  16. Last Saturday, Dr. Irfan Hyder, Dean IoBM delivered a session on the basic concepts of leadership, importance of leadership and why do it fails. He started his discussion by highlighting the mid-1990s era where universities prime focus was on creating business administrators/ managers. But in the late 1990s, the business institute realized that leaders are pivotal, who actually guide and work for the future of the organizations.

There are many leadership theories like servant, transformational, transactional, and autocratic and lassie faire, but according to him, he doesn’t consider autocratic and transactional leadership as leadership styles. He stated that these two styles are the traits and characteristics of a manager. Managers work on the carrot & stick (reward and punishment) approach. They are more work-oriented. There focus is on to get the work done no matter what!. Manager’s primary tools are reward and punishment in order to motivate his team and get the work done. He emphasized on the theory of time dimension that a leader uses. It is a quality of a leader that he knows and understands the value of time. By giving an example of Apple (iPhone) that with one ideology they reinvented the future. After discussing the time dimension, he brought in the concept of legacy. There is nothing more powerful than legacy. A leader needs to set the legacy to get it continued. When they fail in achieving that they fail as a whole. It is the responsibility of a leader to develop a framework that shapes practices which get continued for decades. It is highly important that every leader follows core values in order to set examples for his group. The aim of a leader should be that his people get benefited. Another important point which he discussed was the alignment of vision, which is very important between a leader and his followers. Followers will follow him because of his and theirs similar vision. If a leader creates feeling and does not act on them, he gets failed promptly. Any doubt by his followers may lead him to be a failure if he cannot attain his goals and visions.

A leader should connect with his followers emotionally and sensibly. A leader fails if his vision is not powerful enough to gain the acceptance of them who are following his. A leader should be selfless and should always focus on big vision in order to grow the organization and its people.

  17. Dean of IoBM , Syed Irfan Hyder conducted a guest speaker session with us where he shared his knowledge on the topic “Why leaders fail”. He started his discussion with the changes that have occurred in the business world during all these years and how it has influenced leadership. Now the focus has shifted from management and administration toward leadership and idea generation. Right idea at right time is the biggest success which can lead to wonders. He discussed the legacies of leadership under which he explained legacy of:
    • Building
    • People
    • Values
    • Processes
Some leaders leave behind buildings such as Taj Mahal as their legacy, others train skilled people who follow their footsteps , then there are those that leave behind unique processes to perform task and then those who give and share values. He also discussed types of leaderships and stated that transactional leaders are not leaders instead they are managers because they use carrot and stick technique for performance. True leaders show you the right path towards the goal and how can one achieve it. Transformational leaders just do not depend on reward on punishment rather they have a strong sense of vision which helps them to drive others. A true leader should have clear vision, empathy towards others and he should talk from the heart. His vision should be so high that people look up to him, leaders don’t capture minds rather they capture hearts therefore he should talk from the heart. A leader will fail if his vision is not strong and focused in such a scenario disillusionment can occur; it is the difference in the thoughts of leaders and followers. If a leader fails to match the hopes of followers he will fail. Selfishness can also bring you down a leader cannot be successful if he consider himself the reason of change and betterment. He should appreciate people and work for the overall good of the society and organization.

  18. Dr. Irfan Hyder, delivered an interesting session on why do leaders fail He discussed various leadership theories like transformational, transactional, level 5 leadership, lassie faire ,etc He believes leaders are those people who bring change in others’ lives. However, autocratic and transactional leadership doesn’t change the life rather they dictate the people. Managers work on the carrot & stick, reward & punishment and Pavlov conditioning theories. He gave examples of Allama Iqbal, who dremt for Pakistan in 1930 but Pakistan was made in 1947 which was after his death in 1938. Thought leadership was reflected by Allama Iqbal.
A leader affects your heart but not the mind.He is appealing and doesn’t ask for logic. Leaders who fail may do so when they fail in generating a connection with the followers. He described that a leader may fail when there is a lot of feeling generated about a specific issue but he fails to act on it and fails to actually perform. Then his followers get disappointed and there would be disillusionment. A leader has to be walking the talk.

He explained that sometimes we have to think about the time dimension..He also told that time dimension ideas could be measured through four legacies of a leader that are building, people, processes and values. Buildings are the tangible concrete. We can measure leadership through buildings. He proclaimed that the practices of Qurbani is the process followed by the Muslims over years which is an important ritual.. He also gave the example of FORD that assembly line process is is still followed. For values, he gave example of Daata Darbar and told how people from all over the country come in a huge crowd every day since 1000 years. He commented that People and Values are two main legacies.

  19. The session started rather gradually, with the Dean of IoBM, Dr. Irfan Hyder, jumping straight into what leadership really is, which is fairly impossible to miss considering the various courses understudies finish before resulting in these present circumstances course. However, in spite of this, by digging forward to why they fizzle, he could make us doubt our own particular learning of leadership.

He discussed the various diverse colleges in Pakistan and how each was gradually changing throughout the decades from organization, to leadership and that the worldwide and neighborhood economy was turning out to be progressively dependent on "leaders" more than "supervisors."

As different speakers have done, he talked about the distinctive sorts of leadership and how a few sorts weren't, generally, "leadership" but instead administrative methodologies that depend essentially on reward and discipline. With this said, he discussed the "time measurement" of leadership and how thoughts that "nothing is more capable than a thought whose time has come." With that as a primary concern, it got to be clear that for a pioneer, time genuinely is of the quintessence. In the event that they have a thought, they have to appear it in a procedure or technique straight away.

Dr. Irfan Hyder then continued to discuss the idea of legacies and how every pioneer attempts to desert one. As I would like to think, leaders do this either intentionally or unwittingly. While a few supporters or leaders assemble landmarks in their respect, some have legacies in their procedures and qualities. Lamentably, structures and landmarks disintegrate and values don't generally advance crosswise over eras. That is the reason a few, rather strikingly, abandon their legacy in individuals.

As he would like to think, abandoning individuals as your legacy genuinely is the way leaders shape what's to come. Their inability to do as such results in future eras in the work environment not able to create, use, and activate assets for what's to come. This, as he would see it, is the reason leaders fall flat.

Another motivation behind why they fizzle is, while as yet relating to the measurement of time, they can't stay aware of time and, in importance, individuals' changing needs and needs. Leaders should have the capacity to comprehend and feel for their adherents and create procedures as needs be.

While the stream of the session appeared to be divided at this point, the subject of "reason" started it afresh. Dr. Irfan Hyder discussed how key it is for leaders to have the right reason. To outline this reality, he requested that us understudies google the mission and vision articulations of top association, for example, Disneyland and Wal-Mart.

We see that the leaders who helped these huge associations develop were not driven by a longing for cash but rather by a reason to improve the lives of individuals in somehow. They utilized their identity. values, and activity to set cases and worked for a higher cause. Thusly, the odds of a pioneer falling flat are thin.

  20. The Dean of IoBM, Dr. Irfan Hyder, delivered a session on Why leaders fail? He told us that there are different types of leaders like servant, transformational, transactional, Autocratic). Dr.Irfan also shared his view about the leaders vision which takes time to mature by choosing the right style at the right time in the right situation is the key element of effectiveness. Further more he said that there are four legacy of leaders 1. Building 2. People 3. Processes 4.Values ,leaders who lives behinds the building ,who lives behind the people ,there are leaders who lives behind the processes like Prophet Ibrahim and there are few leaders who lives behinds their values. He than quoted that there are certain values which lives on ,and there are two styles of traits and characteristics of a manager .Manager who works on the carrot and stick ,rewards or punishment approach. The loftiness of the vision that appeals you are giving to the person, a leader vision or purpose , and purpose doesn’t means a reason, it means it’s existence, He said that you company goals should be inspirational and innovative enough to achieve company goals the failure of the leader addresses a leader high expectation vs the reality. Followers will follow him because of his and other similar visions ,if a leader creates feelings and does not act on them. In the last Dr.Irfan discussed the reason that why might a leader fail the biggest reason lies in the category of being a transactional or an autocratic leader.
