Ethical Leadership: Guest talk by Dr. Irfan Hyder (Dean CBM)

IOBM’s experiential learning agenda set for 2015 MBA program is definitely progressing by leaps and bounds. Adding further to the cause, another invaluable guest speaking session was held which was conducted by Prof. Dr. Irfan Hyder, Dean CBM and CES at IOBM, for the class “Transformational and Ethical Leadership”, facilitated by Mr. Shiraz Ahmed. The topic of the lecture was “Ethical Leadership”.

While students were being called for attendance, Dr. Irfan Hyder was planning on what and how to speak on “Ethical Leadership”. It took him only seven minutes. The lecture, hence started, as a small talk.

“Ek ha Ghalib, Aur ek ha Iqbal” and the lecture started with these words. For me these words were the initials (topic) of the lecture. As a keen listener and observer, I knew it instantly that this lecture is going to be insightful and fun. It seems that academic leaders like Prof. Dr. Irfan Hyder himself just can’t get enough of Iqbal and Ghalib. I have rarely attended any leadership lectures in which the speakers would not mention Iqbal or Ghalib in their speeches. It is almost ritualistic among the fraternity of academic leaders to praise Iqbal right after they have adequately praised Almighty Allah and His Prophet, Mohammad (P.B.U.H).

By the way, “Iqbal versus Ghalib” is what he meant by what he said. A brief comparison of their poetry - Ghalib is all about the present while Iqbal, the dreamer, is all about the future. Ghalib is all about inner feelings of human while Iqbal is about the outer feelings. Ghalib is about individual conscience while Iqbal is about collective conscience. Ghalib is about emotional intelligence while Iqbal is about Intellectual intelligence. Ghalib is about emotional expression while Iqbal is about intellectual expression and Ghalib is all about ethics while Iqbal is all about leadership, gradually and eventually Dr. Hyder approached the topic “Ethical Leadership” and started off with the definition of leadership through an extract from Iqbal’s poetry.

“Nigah Buland, Sukhan Dil Nawaz, Jaan Pursouz
Ye hi Hai Rakht-e-Safar Mir-e-Karwan Ke Liye”

This extract from Iqbal’s poetry identifies the characteristics of a leader which are:
  1.  High Ambition (Nigah Buland) - far sightedness, the dream and the vision.
  2. Winsome Speech (Sukhan Dil Nawaz) – access to the hearts of the people through speech.
  3. Passionate Soul (Jaan Pursouz) – the fire in the heart, the integrity and ability to feel pain of the others.

And this is all the luggage that the leader of a Caravan carries.

Another beautiful stanza from Iqbal’s poetry was shared by Dr. Irfan Hyder which was:

“Sabaq Phir Parh Sadaqat Ka, Adalat Ka, Shujaat Ka
Liya Jaye Ga Tujh Se Kaam Dunya Ki Imamat Ka"

This piece of literature exclusively identifies the discipline which one must train for which are:
  1. Truth (Sadaqat)
  2. Justice (Adalat)
  3. Valor (Shujaat)

And such person would be asked to take responsibility for the world’s functioning.

Another beautiful poetry worth mentioning is of Bahadur Shah Zafar which is as follows:

“Zafar admi us ko na janiye ga ho wo kaisa he sahib-e-fehm-o-zaka,
jisae aish mai yad-e-Khuda na rahi, jisae taish mai khauf-e-Khuda na raha”

This extract refers to another quality of a leader which says that never to acknowledge anyone no matter how wise, gentle or intelligent he may seem to be. If he forget his lord when he is in lust and when is unafraid of his lord when he is in anger, he is neither wise nor intelligent. And the highest degree of courage is to control your anger.

The Iqbal centric lecture was on its midway when Dr. Irfan hyder decided to make it further interesting by sharing his personal experience with students and his journey so far. This discussion was full of humor, sarcasm, inspirational quotes, cheerful anecdotes, jokes, laughter, funny instances and the lessons learned during the course. In other words the discussion was lively and cheerful.

Dr. Irfan hyder life journey is not straight forward. It has edgy turns, ups and downs, good and bad times but it is full of invaluable experiences as Dr Irfan said, “… and Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you wanted”. To summarize, Dr Irfan wanted to tell us that whatever we plan for our future is of little importance. Life is uncertain. No matter how intricate or detailed our planning may be, we are always vulnerable to surprises and changes. Good times do not last for long and bad times will inevitably and eventually vanish. However one quality of emergency is that it comes in group. Hence once must maintain enough stock for bad times.

Life is not straight not because it’s the way you want it to be but because life is inherently probabilistic. Dr Irfan hyder described this phenomena putting his life as an example where initially he opted Electronic engineering as his discipline of choice, went straight for an MBA from IBA, than MS from USA in the field of computer sciences and then he did his phd. From a young engineer to a software house owner, from a tutor to university professor and a school’s principle. None of it was on his to-do-list when he started his journey but as he mentioned, “The journey of thousand miles starts with a single step”. He took every opportunity that life offered and rest is history.

To sum up, there were many lessons for the listeners. A brief summary is as follows.
  • Always fulfil your commitment. It seems petty but miss commitment is a grave sin and a highly disregarded act.
  • Know thy self – Be self-aware, be self-conscious and be self-assessing.
  • Be true to yourself.
  • Walk the talk.
  • Practice what you preach.
  • Reflect! Connect the dots and try to make sense out of your life.

All in all the lecture was genuinely a treat in ramzan. Leadership from the lens Iqbal was very insightful. The importance of ethical leadership is enormous as Mr. Shiraz puts it, “if you do not stand for something, you will fall for anything”.

  1. This saturday was on of the most insightful lessons. Mr Irfan Hyder, our dean came to shed some light on ethical leadership.
He started his talk by stating , " Ek haii Ghalib, Ek haii Iqbal." Ghalib was a terminology used to reflect the present, while Iqbal focused on the past.
His talk was backed by poetic verses from the respective poet's poetry and Sunnah of Holy Prophet.
Things took a turn, when he started talking about his personal journey. The decisions that he took, the opportunities that he did not let go and his committment that lead him so far.

Before concluding hs talk, he shed some light on the qualities of ethical leaders. He believes they are:
    1) Self conscious
    2) Truthful
    3) knowledgeable
    4) Practice
    5) Reflective

It was a productive session and we hope to have him again, soon!

  2. It excites me to state about the experience we had last Saturday with extremely insightful Prof. Dr. Irfan Hyder. He proved to be an epitome of brilliance and humor. He spoke to us about Ethical Leadership and inculcated quite the verses of Iqbal and Bahadur Shah Zafar to elucidate his views.
He started off with the comparison of Iqbal and Ghalib and how these two were wide apart in their thoughts. The gist of this comparison was to put forward the point that Iqbal was all about leadership while Ghalib portrayed emotions and ethics by his work. As per Iqbal, the leader should possess three primary qualities and three moral qualities; primarily, leader should be high in ambitions to reach the apex of excellence, should be a great orator and should be highly compassionate. While mentioning moral qualities, a leader should be truthful, courageous and just.
Furthermore, Dr. Irfan shared his personal odyssey to fill our bright minds with his pragmatic examples. He told how life is too uncertain and we should be ready to take up challenges in whatever we are trying to achieve. In short, for being a good leader, we need to know what we want and commit to achieving whatever targets we set. We should be true to ourselves and do what we say; and achieve the primary and moral qualities stated by Iqbal.
Thank you for such a brilliant session.

  3. An inspirational session was conducted by our respectable Dean Dr Syed Irfan Haider on ethical leadership. He highlighted that leadership is a complete personal journey. He shed light on two famous poets Ghalib and Iqbal; Ghalib is an expression of feeling and Iqbal is about an inspiration. According to Iqbal poetry, leader is characterized by vision which is defined as (Niaha-e-Buland) , heart touching talks which is defined as (Sukhan Dilnawaz), and lastly burning desire which is defined as (jahan pursoz). These all qualities are needed to become a leader. The lessons of truth, justice, and bravery are needed to be learnt when you start leading in your life. He also highlighted the importance of being true to your own word. One should try their best to fulfill all their commitments with others; anyone should not commit anything which he cannot do. Great leaders are those who have self awareness, self consciousness, and self assessment. Great leaders also focus on self reflection by making the lives around them as part of their own life. All leaders have patience, concentration, and humility in themselves. During the session, he also focused on emotional intelligence. Leaders with an exceptionally high emotional intelligence get too intellectually involved and have trouble being tolerant of others. He also quoted that the “JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILE STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP”. He also insisted that never find vision but instead find problem for example: Problem became a vision for Edhi to help needy and poor people.

  4. The session started with interesting talk of respectable dean of IOBM , DR.SYED IRFAN HAIDER. T was no doubt an interesting session which covered the topic of authentic and ethical leadership. He started off with a different style to explain us the whole concept which was the poetry of ALLAMA IQBAL. The inspiration we draw from the session was that to be a great leader and to make others follow you as a leader , he must have a vision/dream, speech/communication style that touches the heart of people and can connect them to it, and last of all spirit of affection, having empathy with others. The leader must stay connected to the people who follows him, and must learn the lesson of truth , justice and bravery. So , the way to achieve all this is to be true to yourself and for that one must know the oneself better, he must have self awareness, self concept, self consciousness and self assessment abilities in him. Emotional intelligence has a great role to play in shaping an ethical leader. The leader must be a good listener, he should reflect upon the experience and make a good use of it. He should be able to hold himself accountable for the things he is responsible for, thus journey of impacting and leading 1000 lives start with a simple and basic step be the real person you are and have the will power, commitment and passion to be able to guide the people with pure heart and mind.

  6. Last Saturday was a brilliant experience with Dr. Irfan Hyder. He started his session by stating two of the most legendary names of Urdu literature- Iqbal and Ghalib. He kept on making it interesting by comparing them and incorporating verses of Iqbal and another legend Ghalib. He made it clear that a good leader must possess the zeal and eagerness to achieve what they dream of, they should be loyal and courageous and they must always abide by the highest morals. He then shared his own experiences and made it apparent that life is not a smooth path. We need to be flexible as well as tough enough to go through the bumpy ride of struggle and hardships.
In a nutshell- it was a very productive session and I utterly feel delighted to have been able to attend it. I hope that there are more sessions ahead.

  7. Experience is what you get when you don't get what you wanted! The message truly is a self explanatory one, you always end up learning from everything you do in your life. And you must use that experience to explore yourself. To be an effective and successful leader, you do not need to imitate others, rather you need to find about yourself, there is always a leader inside you and others follow you when you are real to them, because they want to follow a true and honest leader, not a leader who is a result of imitation.

  8. you do not have to be born with any particular characteristics or traits to lead. You also do not have to be at the top of your organization. Anyone can learn to be an authentic leader. The journey begins with leaders understanding their life stories. Authentic leaders frame their stories in ways that allow them to see themselves not as passive observers but as individuals who learn from their experiences. These leaders make time to examine their experiences and to reflect on them, and in doing so they grow as individuals and as leaders. Authentic leaders also work hard at developing self-awareness through persistent and often courageous self-exploration.

  9. Our Dean Mr.Irfan Hyder, when came to our class, didn’t seem prepared for the talk. He sat there for a while and read some excerpts from the book. But once he started the lecture, boy was he prepared. He started off with poet of the East Allama Mohammad Iqbal and his concept of leadership and Khudi. It was a very informative session and the fact that he talked for two whole hours without any preparation was the result of him being a voracious reader and he just poured in all his lifetime experience into this talk. He stated that a leader has to be well aware of himself and only then will he be able to lead from the front. Self-consciousness, Truthfulness, and Integrity are some other characteristics of good leaders. At the end of his talk, Mr Hyder emphasized that being an avid reader gives you an edge over everyone because you are well equipped with knowledge and suggested us to read more often.

  10. Leadership requires a vision and association to remain connected with people. It takes self reflection, humility, patience and concentration to address the hearts of people. What one has today might not have it tomorrow. Youth will turn to old, wealth to poverty, health to illness and certainly life to death. Thus an ethical leadership requires us to ponder over good characters for improvement and to less privilege ones for grooming our personalities.

  11. Dr irfan Hyder is a legend in himself. His vast experience and diverse educational background speaks volumes about his knowledge. What inspired me the most about him was that, he choose to quote his national treasures, Galib and Iqbal rather than people of the western world when consulted on the topic of ethics.
“Nigah Buland, Sukhan Dil Nawaz, Jaan Pursouz
Ye hi Hai Rakht-e-Safar Mir-e-Karwan Ke Liye” he recited
Through Iqbals poetry he identified three characteristics of a leader
    1. High in ambition
    2. Winsome speech
    3. Passionate soul
He then went onto say that a leader must possess other qualities also, he should be trustworthy, he should be just and posses great courage.
In the end, he encouraged us to take advantage of our youth, spend this time working for something we are passionate about, solve a real life problem, read – to gain knowledge.
He stressed on the fact that we may not always have time on our hands, there may come a period when we may be stuck with an emergency and will become too busy. Therefore we should seize the day.
    “Carpe Diem”

  12. Dr Irfan Hyder, Our Dean discussed with us about ethical leadership. He gave us the example of Allama Iqbal and Ghalib who in their verses give us a message of inspiration. Ghalib is about expression of feelings whereas Iqbal is about future. He even told that a leader will be characterized 3 things. First is the vision that is dream. like Allama Iqbal had a dream of Pakistan and then through his poetry he addressed the hearts of people he was leading which is the second characteristic of a leader. third is Empathy that a leader should have. he should try to understand the feelings of others and make others feel happy.
With an another verse he said a leader should have ethical values and for that he should possess 3 things i.e truth, justice and bravery. the leader should be true to his own-self must conquer his anger which is the highest form of bravery.
He quoted a statement that " Journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step" which means that if you want to have a vision in your life, do not seek a vision, seek a problem, every problem has a solution, you give the solution , you will become a leader. De. Irfan Hyder gave us the example of Edhi who is now owning a large number of ambulances after he recognized the problem.
    .
the session was a great inspiration for the youth and gave us a lesson of how and what you need to be an authentic plus ethical leader.
